Byron Bay Brands you NEED to Know

Alright, I’ve mentioned it before but fashion lovers visiting Australia are in big trouble. Or maybe in heaven? I know I am. I am not sure if it’s the combination of the laid back attitude and beachy lifestyle mixed with modern, timeless designs, but they are doing something right over here. Found yourself in Byron Bay? Forget about it- here are the Byron Bay brands you need to know.

Zulu and Zephr store

Byron Bay has been an up and coming hot spot over recent years due to its beautiful beaches, pleasant weather, and over-all photogenic qualities. Super stylish cafes and restaurants have been popping up, Instagram stars have been hyping it up, and now, the best part, it has become home to some of Australia’s most iconic brands. As well as some amazing lesser known labels.

Something about the effortless chic design coming out of this region has really taken me. Plus, these brands are all focused on sustainability, high quality and long-term wearable fashion. You will find lots of clean lines, modern shapes, and styles you can wear from season to season. So let’s dig in to my favorite Byron Bay brands.

The Best Byron Bay Brands

Zulu & Zephr

This one has to be one of my all time favorite Byron Bay brands. Perfect swimwear and a flattering color palate are just the beginning. Unique shapes and comfy, cool style make for great everyday wear as well. Feminine shapes + some boxy tops= just what I’m looking for.

Although the brand was technically born in Bondi Beach, it was raised in Byron Bay where it claims it origin and houses its operations. They just opened their first store in my favorite area in Byron, the Industrial District. White walls, simple design and muted colors draw you in to the store whether you know the name or not.

Afends

Now this one’s got a story. Punk rock-tee brand turned sustainable, hemp-based full-line fashion, Afends has grown into more than just edgy style for sun-seekers. They use the philosophy of “question everything” to inspire people to educate themselves and not just believe what they hear. Something we need more of these days.

Started in Byron Bay in 2006 making hardcore/ punk graphic tees, the brand added in surf and skate culture resulting in a more creative and wearable feel. From cool graphics to simple silhouettes, the line for women is easy-to-wear and, in my opinion, a little 70’s inspired. Which is never a bad thing.

You will see Afends stores sprinkled around Australia and if you’re shopping in Byron Bay, be sure to stop in the store right there on the main drag, Lawson Street. Heavily focused on using only sustainable fibers, fabrics and production processes, Afends is a brand you will feel good about wearing. Read more about their sustainable fibers, such as trees fibers, hemp and recycled polyester on their website here, it’s quite impressive.

Spell & the Gyspy

This is it, the Byron icon. If you follow any Aussie influencers (and many non-Aussies), I guarantee you have heard of this brand or at least seen some of their clothing. Spell was built on influencer marketing and community building and quickly become one of the most recognizable brands on the gram.

That being said, the brand started as a simple line from two sisters who reunited in Byron Bay to pursue a dream they had had since they were young. Inspired by their stories of their parents and grandparents, the sisters built a brand that is vibrant, bohemian and nostalgic. Every piece you find at Spell is feminine, unique to anything else, and made of beautiful, high-quality fabrics.

St. Agni

Growing from their cult woven shoe following, St. Agni is making pieces unlike anyone else. Started in 2014 in Byron, Lara Fells wanted to create refined, functional items she couldn’t seem to find elsewhere. With beautiful neutral colors and simple yet statement shapes, you will find something here to elevate your wardrobe that’s also wearable every day.

Puff-sleeves, silk dresses, unique wide leg pants- what more could you want? The Lisa Trousers (pictured) are literally the pants of my dreams. These are the kind of things you will find at St. Agni, items you’ve always wanted- perfect down to the last detail.

Bonus: the brand just opened an AMAZING store front in the industrial area of Byron- an absolute must visit if you are in the area.

ROWIE the Label

In true Australian fashion (no pun intended), Rowie is another sustainably focused brand. With that familiar refined bohemian style, Rowie is inspired by the feminine form. Started in Byron by self-made designer Rowie Moore, the brand has grown into a nationally recognized name.

For easy beachy looks that are modern and effortless, Rowie is a great go-to. From dresses to short sets, there are so many looks to love. When you walk in the store, you immediately feel calm, surrounded by soothing colors and fabrics and a minimalistic design.

Auguste the Label

Feminine and floral, a couple words I would use to describe the aesthetic of Auguste the Label. If you love dresses and form flattering shapes, Auguste has you covered. The brand was created by Ebony Eagles in 2015 with the intention of creating pieces that would be loved for seasons, and generations, to come.

Auguste is yet another sustainably focused brand with many different environmental initiatives, such as partnering with 1% for the Planet. With 1% for the Planet, companies pledge to donate 1% of online sales to the preservation and restoration of the natural environment. You can read more about their initiatives here.

Rue Stiic

Inspired by her travels through Europe, Bali, Southern California and Eastern Australia, Jillian Beed started a line of clothing that can take the wearer straight from the beach to a night on the town. A goal of the brand is to create pieces that can be styled to each unique individual as they see fit.

I love that each piece is super unique and can be styled so many ways, plus the fabric is always a stand out. The store in the Industrial District in Byron is a great visit but if you aren’t in the area, you can find them on other big resellers, such as Myer.com.au and in plenty of boutiques around Australia. You can see the full list on the stockists page of their website linked below.

Thrills

It all started when three Americans moved to Byron Bay in the late 2000’s to start a vintage motorcycle import business. Insert: Thrills. The business quickly spawned branded t-shirts and the rest is history. Crazy right??

In their own words, Thrills is fueled by their love for music, art and vintage Harley’s. The result is an incredibly edgy and unique line of clothing for men and women that is also wearable. Denim, graphic tees, and cool prints are the forefront of the brand with plenty more to offer.

Bonus: Miss Brown’s Vintage

Ok so this is just a little bonus if you happen to be in Byron Bay. This is my favorite vintage store I have visited in Australia (maybe anywhere) and one of the best Byron Bay shops. If you are on the search for the perfect vintage Levi’s, you will find them here. They also have perfectly curated vintage tees as well super unique leather bags. This is a small Australian chain but they are all independently owned so they have different collections of vintage finds and the Byron location is the BEST. Definitely check it out if you are in town!

What beautiful brands – I have only head of a few of them before. But I agree that Australia is definitely doing something right in the fashion stakes (maybe I am a biased Australian …). I haven’t been to Byron Bay yet, but when I do, I will be sure to visit a few of these stores x
